Chapter Sixteen

“Kiki, you’re not leaving because of the thing with Mark, are you?” Chris stood in her doorway in his cargo shorts and a T-shirt, watching her pull clothes out of her closet. “I’m a big boy. I’m over it, more or less.” She knew he was referring to the night he found Mark coming out of her room because she hadn’t been able to bring herself to repeat what the jerk had said last time she saw him.

She folded a pair of red capris and put them in her suitcase. “No, querido. It’s not like that. I’m just spending a long weekend with Erin. I promise I’ll be back Sunday night.” She didn’t want to dwell on anything related to Mark, so she started a new subject.

“You know, Erin has always had the biggest crush on you, and you seemed interested once, but then nothing really happened.”

“Yeah. I know.” Chris looked as though there was more to the story.

“Tell me.”

“Well...” He sat down on her bed. “I don’t know if you remember. When Hank was still a puppy, we double dated, me with her, and you with that other guy. I can’t remember his name.”

“I can’t remember his name either, but I know the night you’re talking about.” Kiki picked up a pair of red sandals and stuffed them into another bag.

“You were still in the bedroom getting ready when Erin showed up,” Chris said. “Hank was wagging his tail and turning around in circles, all excited about her, but when he tried to approach her, she cringed.”

“She was afraid of a puppy?”

“I don’t know. It was a phobia or an aversion, or something.”

“I can’t believe I never knew that. When we were in college, our apartment didn’t allow pets, and I guess it never came up.” Kiki frowned as she walked over to her dresser and started dropping things into her makeup case.

“I didn’t tell anyone because it sounds like a minor thing, but—”

“No, I know what you mean.”

Chris shrugged. “I guess if I’m ever going to end up with someone permanently, I’ll have to find a woman I like better than my dog.”

Kiki chuckled and turned toward him. “Or one who won’t make you choose.”

“Better yet.”

She zipped up the case, walked over and sat down next to Chris. “I always knew you two weren’t right for each other, anyway. I told her that before you went out.”

“Then why did you push us together?”

“I didn’t think she’d be satisfied until she got to go out with you, so she would know for herself, instead of always wondering. You’re quite a catch, you know.”

“You sound like Mamá.”

“My tía and I agree on a lot of things. She’s a very wise woman.”

“Do you agree with her because she’s wise, or do you think she’s wise because she agrees with you?” Chris asked in his smart-aleck voice.

“What difference does it make, as long as we’re right, and you do what we tell you?”

Chris smiled, and stood up. “You’re not the boss of me.
